Leaders of Sustainable Biofuels coalition welcomes the Slovak company ENVIRAL as new member of the coalition promoting advanced biofuels as fast track solution to cut transport emissions.
ENVIRAL is the largest producer of bioethanol in the Slovak Republic. The company recently announced its decision to invest in a full scale commercial cellulosic ethanol plant for production of cellulosic ethanol from agricultural residues. This new plant will be owned and operated directly by ENVIRAL and is planned to be integrated into the existing facilities at ENVIRAL’s Leopoldov site in Slovakia with an annual production capacity of 50.000 tons.
LSB is a coalition of leading advanced biofuels producers and technology developers committed to making a significant contribution to meeting the EU ambitions of decarbonizing the transport sector. Advanced biofuels bring multiple benefits in terms of CO2 reduction, investments, revenues for farmers and forestry, improved waste management practices, job creation and an increase in energy security.
Marko Janhunen, Chair of LSB and Director, Public Affairs at UPM welcomes ENVIRAL: “It is great to see a key biofuels player joining our coalition at this critical moment when EU policy post 2020 is being shaped. Advanced biofuels can provide opportunities across the EU, in all Member States. With the right regulatory framework we can unleash the investment potential”.
Dáša Mamrillová from ENVIRAL stated: “ENVIRAL sees the need for EU wide policy to promote advanced biofuels that are often based on novel technologies and complex feedstock. We are committed to creating sustainable biofuels for consumers, to reduce dependence on fossil oil, and look forward to collaborating with the advanced biofuels industry in the LSB coalition”.
LSB requests a dedicated target to be defined for advanced biofuels, as proposed by the Commission in the form of Annex IXA mandate, and the related feedstock list. A specific advanced biofuels target based on unchanged Annex IX part A is a must for creating investment and investor security for advanced biofuels and the mandate must be in place starting 2021.

ENVIRAL
ENVIRAL was established in 2004 as the first producer of bioethanol in Slovakia. The commercial production of bioethanol was launched in July 2007. Current annual production is 155.000 m3 of bioethanol. The company utilizes a dry process of bioethanol production, mainly from one input material – corn. In ENVIRAL a non-waste technology is installed, focused on minimizing the consumption of fossil fuel, natural gas and electric energy, which notably reduces the emissions of greenhouse gases. ENVIRAL is member of Envien Group – one of the largest and most significant groups of companies in the CEE region active in production of biofuels, used in mixtures with conventional diesel and gasoline. The group consists of six production companies in four European countries – Slovakia, Czech Republic, Hungary and Croatia with total yearly production of 220.000 m3 bioethanol and 305.000 t FAME.
